Neurodivergent-Informed Therapy Services in Brooklyn, NY
Neurodiversity reflects the natural variations in how our brains process, experience, and engage with the world. At North Brooklyn Marriage & Family Therapy, we provide an inclusive space to honor these differences and support your authentic self.
What is Neurodivergent-Informed Therapy?
Neurodivergence refers to the wide range of natural variations in how human brains work, process information, and engage with the world. Neurodivergent therapy services include support for conditions like Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and more. These differences are not flaws or deficits, but instead reflect the rich neurodiversity of humans.
As Dr. Devon Price highlights in the book “Unmasking Autism,” many neurodivergent individuals spend much of their lives “masking,” suppressing or hiding traits that don’t align with societal expectations, to fit into neurotypical norms. This masking often leads to exhaustion, anxiety, and a disconnection from one’s authentic self. By understanding neurodivergence, we can create a society that values and celebrates the unique strengths and insights neurodiverse people possess.
At North Brooklyn Marriage & Family Therapy, we take a socially just and inclusive approach to neurodivergent-informed therapy, recognizing the systemic pressures and stigmas that can marginalize neurodiverse individuals. We aim to provide a supportive space where you can unmask and reconnect with your authentic self. Whether you’re exploring your identity, navigating relationships, or working through challenges at the intersection of neurodivergence and other aspects of your life, we are here to support you. Our practice is committed to fostering a culture of acceptance, accessibility, and empowerment, helping you thrive on your terms.
Common Characteristics of Neurodivergence
Neurodivergence encompasses a spectrum of experiences, each shaped by unique cognitive, emotional, and sensory traits. These characteristics can profoundly influence how individuals interact with the world, approach challenges, and express their strengths. Understanding these diverse aspects of neurodivergence not only fosters compassion but also highlights the incredible creativity and innovation often found within neurodivergent communities. Below are some common traits that showcase the rich complexity of neurodivergent experiences:
- Unique cognitive styles: Neurodivergent individuals often have distinct ways of thinking, such as hyperfocus, pattern recognition, or divergent problem-solving.
- Sensory sensitivities: Heightened or diminished sensory experiences (sensitivity to light, sound, textures, or tastes) are common, leading to unique interactions with the environment.
- Emotional intensity: Strong emotional responses and deep empathy can be characteristics of neurodivergence, though they may also lead to challenges in regulating emotions.
- Executive functioning differences: Tasks like organization, time management, and prioritization might be challenging, often requiring creative strategies to navigate daily life.
- Communication variations: Some individuals may prefer direct, literal communication, while others might struggle with social norms or nonverbal cues.
- Special interests: Deep passions or intense focus on specific topics or hobbies are common and can provide joy, comfort, and expertise.
- Masking: Many neurodivergent individuals hide their traits to fit into societal expectations, which can be exhausting and impact mental health.
- Creative and innovative thinking: Neurodivergent minds often approach problems from unique angles, offering fresh perspectives and solutions.
- Heightened or altered awareness: A strong sense of justice, hyper-awareness of social dynamics, or a unique perspective on the world may shape how neurodivergent individuals engage with others.
- Processing differences: Information may be processed more slowly, more deeply, or in a nonlinear way, often resulting in thorough understanding or insight.
