What is PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a diagnosis for someone who has experienced trauma. This can happen to anyone who has been through a deeply upsetting or life-altering experience. It might be a single event, like a car accident, or a series of events, like ongoing abuse or harm. PTSD isn’t just about what happened, it’s about how your mind and body carry the weight of those experiences. Sometimes, the brain gets stuck trying to process what happened, and the effects linger long after the event is over. This can make it feel like the trauma is continuing to happen, even when you know you’re safe.
PTSD symptoms can appear in many forms. You might find it hard to sleep, feel constantly on edge, or avoid places and situations that bring back painful memories. For some, there’s a sense of disconnection from emotions or an overwhelming burden of guilt or shame. When left untreated, trauma can also deeply impact relationships and sexual health.
These reactions aren’t a sign of weakness — they’re a reflection of how profoundly the experience has affected your mind and body. Trauma doesn’t just live in your memories; it’s stored in your body, shaping how you feel and respond. That’s why healing often requires more than just time — it’s about finding safety and balance within yourself again, with the guidance of a trauma-informed therapist.
Common Characteristics of PTSD
- Intrusive memories: Recurring, unwanted memories or flashbacks of the traumatic event that feel vivid and overwhelming.
- Nightmares and sleep disturbances: Frequent bad dreams or difficulty falling and staying asleep, often linked to the trauma.
- Hypervigilance: Feeling constantly on edge, easily startled, or always alert for potential danger.
- Avoidance: Actively steering clear of places, people, or situations that remind you of the traumatic experience.
- Emotional numbness: Feeling detached from emotions, others, or your surroundings, as if life feels less real or meaningful.
- Negative mood changes: Persistent feelings of guilt, shame, fear, or hopelessness, and a difficulty experiencing positive emotions.
- Difficulty concentrating: Struggling to focus on tasks or remember details due to the mental strain caused by trauma.
- Physical symptoms: Experiencing tension, a racing heart, or other bodily signs of stress, even when no immediate danger is present.
