What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a research-based, practical approach designed to address negative thought patterns, known as cognitive distortions, which can impact behaviors, mental health, and overall quality of life. CBT operates on the principle that by changing unhelpful or unrealistic thoughts, individuals can directly influence their emotional reactions and behavioral responses. Through a process called cognitive restructuring, clients learn to reframe distorted thinking and make realistic changes to their behavior, leading to healthier outcomes.
CBT is not only effective in addressing a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but also focuses on the power of choices and control in everyday life.
At North Brooklyn Marriage & Family Therapy, we work with clients to identify specific areas of concern and provide practical tools to help them cope and thrive. While CBT acknowledges the influence of past thought and behavioral patterns, it is grounded in the present, encouraging clients to focus on what they can control in the here and now. This emphasis on realistic thinking empowers individuals to make more balanced, healthier choices, leading to greater emotional well-being and more adaptive responses to stressors.
By helping clients challenge cognitive distortions and replace them with constructive alternatives, CBT promotes lasting change and a stronger sense of personal agency.
Common characteristics of CBT
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT sessions are structured around setting clear goals and regularly reviewing progress while addressing specific challenges. Collaboration between the therapist and client is key, as they work together to create strategies for meaningful change.

- Homework assignments: Clients are often given assignments to practice skills or techniques outside of therapy sessions, promoting real-world application of lessons learned.
- Focus on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors: CBT is based on the idea that thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected, and changing one can influence others.
- Problem-solving: It emphasizes developing problem-solving skills to cope with difficult situations.
- Teaches coping skills: Clients learn specific strategies to manage symptoms, such as relaxation techniques or cognitive restructuring (challenging and changing unhelpful thoughts).
